TIPS FOR COMMUNION

TIPS

1. Please arrive before 10:30 to receive any new instructions from the Pastors or person in charge of the communion for that day.

2. Those assigned to serve the balcony should remember to serve the person in the sound booth.

3. When the congregation is spread out in the pews, make eye contact with your serving partner to determine how best to serve those at each end of the pews without causing them to struggle to pass the trays.

COMMUNION SERVING PROCEDURE

4 Servers (plus Pastors)

Thank you for volunteering to serve communion at the 11:00 AM service this Sunday.  Please see the position Diagram and your assigned position number on the reverse side.

1. Before worship or during the hymn sung prior to communion, take your seat in the front pew according to your number assignment.  Choir members who are eligible may serve if there is no anthem sung during communion. The pastors will serve the choir, the organist, the lay leader, and any others in the chancel.

2. The servers seated on the center aisle will begin filing up toward the chancel area when the Pastor  says, “The gifts of God for the people of God.  Come for all things are ready.”  Each server will receive a bread tray from the pastor,  who will pick it up from the communion table and carry it down the chancel steps to the server.  Servers are not expected to go up the steps.

3. The servers  will immediately walk to their numbered position on the diagram and serve that portion of the congregation.

4. At the conclusion of the serving of the bread, all servers assemble in the rear of the sanctuary in the order shown in the diagram.  SERVE YOURSELF THE BREAD.  Walk to the chancel area and hand your tray to one of the pastors.  Again, servers are not expected to go up the steps.

5. Take a wine/juice tray from one of the pastors.   Immediately go to your assigned area and serve the congregation as before.

6. Assemble again at the rear of the sanctuary.  When all four are gathered go forward.  All trays are handed to the pastors, who place them on the communion table.  After giving up your tray, move back to your place in the front pew and immediately  be seated;  one of the pastors will serve you the wine/juice.  All will take the cup in unison.

7. After the final music is completed at the conclusion of the worship service, please assist with picking up the used communion cups.  Trays placed below the front pews are for this purpose.

Cups should be taken to the basement kitchen.  Don’t overlook cups in the chancel, including the organ console, and balcony.
