Legislative Chaplains for 2012 State Legislature
The Washington State House of Representatives seeks local chaplains to deliver the opening prayer for the 2012 Washington State Legislature.

We want to have a deep, loving relationship with God. We’ve read about the saints – and, oh, yes, the mystics – who seem to know Jesus personally. “But I’m so busy!” we lament. In this workshop we will look at one tool for finding more time for God. We will address the conundrum that life is out of balance, and explore four prayer styles: reciting the prayers of others, speaking to God from the heart, listening for and to God, and being with God. We will emphasize listening. Bring a sack lunch and a journal.

IFAD brings together social justice advocates from faith communities and nonprofits across the state of Washington. This year the faith community is uniting on Valentine’s Day to call on our legislators to unite their hearts and minds and raise revenue instead of cutting funding for programs that support the common good.

The day’s activities include workshops on issues and advocacy (topics will include the state budget, environment, disability services, and housing/homelessness), legislative briefings, visits with your state legislators, and an interfaith worship.
Some scholarships may be available for those with limited funds–please call or e-mail with your request.

Tom Rawson – a banjo-playing, crowd-delighting folksinger – performs songs of peace, social justice and just plain fun in a concert to benefit the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR).Rawson has charmed and invigorated audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest with his infectious wit, energy and songs that you just can’t resist singing along with. As Steve Durfee wrote in the Victory Review, “Tom Rawson – Pete Seeger. These two run together in my mind. We gladly follow his lead and sing with the chorus from the very first song…First timer or old fan, old song or new, it always seems we are singing our favorites with an old friend.”

The Olympia FOR (www.olympiafor.org) has been active since 1976. It is the local chapter of a 97-year-old nationwide (www.forusa.org) and international (www.ifor.org) interfaith pacifist organization that has opposed every war since World War I. While working for peace in foreign relations, the FOR has simultaneously worked for profound nonviolence and social justice throughout society.
