May 20 -June 10: Christian Feminism

For this class we will use the following definition:

Christian feminists believe that God does not discriminate on the basis of biologically-determined characteristics such as sex and race.^[2] Their major issues include the ordination of women, male dominance in Christian marriage, recognition of equal spiritual and moral abilities, reproductive rights, and the search for a feminine or gender-transcendent divine.

Our instructor will start off with a “brief overview of the development of patriarchy and the system of privilege that leads to discrimination.  Identifying the system that promotes and allows discrimination help us to see how a community can work together to diminish  inequality and deepen spiritual commitment”

Eido Frances Carney Roshi is a Soto Zen priest and teacher and founder of Olympia Zen Center.  She was Adjunct Faculty in Humanities at South Puget Sound Community College from 1996 until 2006 where she taught World Religions, creative writing,  and other subjects.  She is former President of the Soto Zen Buddhist Association, a national organization of Soto Zen Buddhist priests.  In 2008, her teacher, Niho Roshi named her Abbess of Fukujuji, a new temple in Nakasho, Japan.  She is editing a book of essays by Soto Zen women priests called Securing the Marrow which will be published in 2012.  She will retire from formal teaching at Olympia Zen Center in December 2012 and move south.

We are fortunate  to have her as our facilitator.

Others to follow throughout July and August are Donna Lotton, Jon Pugh, Allen Chase, the TUCO Classical Chamber Ensemble, Anne Edge, Leah Wilson, Heather Morton, Trinity Sokol, Cheri Kelly, Lucas Luttermoser and Meggin Turk. You will hear vocal solos, Gospel  and jazz, contemporary Christian music, instrumental ensembles, handbells, string solos, brass solos, “Old Time Religion” music, and a great variety of musical styles.

Join us in our worship offerings of music for contemplation, celebration and prayer this summer.

The Rivermen are a featured band at the OlyJazz Society annual festival at St. Martins college on June 28-29-30 and July 1. A special offering will be received at the July 1 service, to benefit the youth music scholarship fund of the OlyJazz Society.

Sunday School students will enjoy their last official Sunday School hour by making special gifts to honor their teachers. Their thank you gifts will be presented at the June 10 single 10:00am service.

Single services will continue through September 9, with Family Worship at 10:00.

TUCO will also have a booth at the Festival where we will hand out cookies and show the church’s support for LGBT folks.

Please sign up to bake cookies to hand out at the booth or to staff the booth at the Festival.

Sign-up sheets are available in the church lobby before and after services.

We also hope you will join us in the Parade on Sunday, June 10th.  It’s always lots of fun!
