United Churches Recycles – Who Doesn’t Love Change?

It is a good thing that we here at the United Churches of Olympia love change, because we are being faced with some.  Our disposal company has informed us that they have altered their system for sorting items.  This is because Silver Springs Organics has limited what they will be collecting as compostable materials.

The biggest change for us is that coffee cups are no longer to be put into the green containers for compost. So, forget ...

Earth Day is April 22

Although TUCO will not be having an Earth Day worship service this year, there are still many ways we can observe Earth Day.

Tell friends and family your special reasons for being thankful “for the beauty of the Earth.”

Avoid driving a car, by taking a bus, riding a bike, or walking.

Take advantage of energy conservation techniques such as turning off unnecessary lights or putting on a sweater instead of turning up the heat.

Read these words from Psalm 104: 1,24

Seeking Environmental Justice – How Far Have We Come, and What Can We Do?

January 13 – February 10, 2013

Fireside Room

10:30 am

TUCO member Ruth Shearer used her Ph.D. in genetics and cancer-related research to advocate on behalf of people who had been harmed and even poisoned by misuse of chemicals in the 1980’s. Her non-scientific memoir of those experiences, Adventures in Seeking Environmental Justice in the 1980’s is filled with short powerful vignettes, such as “Arrested for Rescuing His Children”, “Toxic Golf Course”, and “The Cancer Epidemic”.

We’ll use her book as the basis for ...

Be Prepared to be Caught Green Handed

The United Churches of Olympia congregation now has over a month of experience using our two recycling options. Now it is time to reward positive behavior.
When you STOP, THINK, and SORT you may be given a Green Hand notice.
It is as simple as putting a coffee cup, which is uncoated, non-waxy, into the COMPOST (GREEN) container, or putting a soda can or plastic container into the RECYCLE (BLUE) container. This is also where Sunday Bulletins and ...

Church Recycling Hints

The United Churches of Olympia congregation is well on the way to being comfortable with the two recycling options we are now using:

  • Coffee cups, which are uncoated, non-waxy, go into the COMPOST.
  • Soda cans or plastic containers go into RECYCLE.
  • Plastic bags ...

There are two recycling options, in addition to regular waste collection.

Current recycle containers have been relabeled with BLUE signs. There are new, smaller GREEN containers for compost.  New stickers, signs, and posters will help with this transition.

Friendly folks will also be around to get us moving on the right track.

The main things to look for and remember:

STOP — ...
