The Gnostic Documents from Nag Hammadi
May 12 – June 9 at 10:30 am in the Chapel
During this five week course, Dr. Ian Werrett will offer a series of presentations on the Gnostic texts from Nag Hammadi. Discovered in upper Egypt in the winter of 1945, the documents from Nag Hammadi were written in Coptic, inscribed on papyrus leaves and bound into thirteen separate codices, or books, sometime between the first and second century A.D. The literary remains of a Christian movement that was deemed to be heretical by the leaders of the early Church, the Gnostic texts from Nag Hammadi shed light on competing forms of Christianity in the early years of the Christian tradition and provide us with a wealth of knowledge about Gnostic theology and beliefs.
Dr. Werrett is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and the Director of the Spiritual Life Institute at Saint Martin’s University. He earned a B.A. from Saint Martin’s College in 1996, a M.A. from Trinity Western University in 2000 and a Ph.D. from the University of St Andrews in 2006. As a scholar of Ancient Judaism, Early Christianity and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Dr. Werrett has traveled to the Middle East on a number of occasions to work with ancient manuscripts in situ and to participate in the archaeological excavations at the Byzantine site of Ein Gedi.
